American Football: The most popular sport.

We love our sports here in the USA! Whether it be hockey or boxing, basketball or soccer, professional sporting events always garner the highest ratings on television. Even the NCAA, the country’s premiere college sports association has an insanely huge following, with countless fans flooding stadiums in their school colors.

However, there’s one sport that rules them all in terms of the sheer number of fans – American football. Sure, baseball may be America’s favorite pastime, but football is truly the undisputed king of American sports.

Studies have shown that as much as 45 percent of the American public that tunes in to sports would rather watch football than any other sport. And of that number, 35 percent are regular viewers of the National Football League, while approximately 10 percent are rabid fans of amateur football.

The Super Bowl, professional football’s biggest event, is also the most-watched single-night show on American television every year. Over 110 million viewers have tuned in to their TV sets on an average for the past decade. To put that in perspective, an ordinary TV show on network television averages around 9 million viewers.

And we still haven’t touched on college football, yet. Statistics show that over 50 million people buy tickets to attend games of their favorite schools and teams every year, and a total of 200 million watch from the TV sets at home.
